about

This song showcases the fabulous Johnny Griff with his driving double bass beats, and incorporates the use of slide on the banjo. It's an experimentation in getting a different, more blues-based sound from frailing banjo, and Mark Stoney worked his magic with some groovy subtle background effects. I might be biased, but I like to think this song shows that banjo CAN be cool!

lyrics

Takin’ me down, takin’ me down
Can’t stop the Devil from takin’ me down
Takin’ me down, takin’ me down
Can’t stop the Devil from takin’ me down

Used to be a good girl, never was a saint
But I used to be a good girl, played it pretty straight
Now he’s takin’ me down, takin’ me down
Can’t stop the devil from takin’ me down
Used to know what balance was, used to have a goal
But the scales they have tipped now the Devil’s got my soul
And he’s takin’ me down, takin’ me down
Can’t stop the Devil from takin’ me down

Smokin’ and drinkin’ and paintin’ the town
Paintin’ it red, paintin’ it red
It’s the colour of the Devil and he’s in my head
Colour of the Devil and he’s in my head
Colour of the Devil and he’s in my head

(Deeper deeper deeper down)

Used to have it figured out, used to have it made
But the Devil swapped the cards in the hand that I played
And he’s takin’ me down, takin’ me down
Can’t stop the Devil from takin’ me down
Build up my defence, try to keep a poker face
But the Devil’s judge and jury and I’m losing this case
Yeah he’s takin’ me down, takin’ me down
Can’t stop the Devil from takin’ me down

Smokin’ and drinkin’ and paintin’ the town
Paintin’ it red, paintin’ it red
It’s the colour of the Devil and he’s in my head
Colour of the Devil and he’s in my head
Colour of the Devil and he’s in my head

(Deeper deeper deeper down)

Takin’ me down, Takin’ me down
Deeper deeper deeper down
Deeper deeper deeper down
Deeper deeper deeper down

Need to get back to where I used to be
But the Devil well it seems he’s other plans for me
Yeah he’s takin’ me down, takin’ me down
Can’t stop the Devil from takin’ me down
Don’t know what to do so I’ll have another drink
And the Devil he’s laughing as he’s watching me sink
Yeah he’s takin’ me down, takin’ me down
Can’t stop the Devil from takin’ me down

Smokin’ and drinkin’ and paintin’ the town
Paintin’ it red, paintin’ it red
It’s the colour of the Devil and he’s in my head
Colour of the Devil and he’s in my head
Colour of the Devil and he’s in my head

(Deeper deeper deeper down)
