about
I often get asked if this song is traditional. It isn't, but I always take that as a compliment as I really wanted it to sound like an American old-timey folk singalong song. I guess when I wrote it I half had in mind an old woman singing to herself on the front porch, looking back at a mis-spent but colourful life. There's definitely a tiny bit of myself in there too though! This track also features Ash Gray adding some old-timey guitar magic!
lyrics
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, sold my soul for a dime
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, won’t you give me a little more time
Never burned sugar cane Lord, never did hoe no corn
Never was gonna be a slave Lord since the day that I was born
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, sold my soul for a dime
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, won’t you give me a little more time
A ramblin’ girl I am Lord and a ramblin’ girl I’ll stay
Don’t go givin’ me a man Lord ‘cos I gotta be on my way
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, sold my soul for a dime
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, won’t you give me a little more time
Trouble my whole damn life Lord, I done everybody wrong
Never would’ve made a good wife Lord, oh I love’em and then I’m gone
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, sold my soul for a dime
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, won’t you give me a little more time
Drank my money away Lord and I gambled the rest I’m told
Never made the gamblin’ pay Lord oh I’ve never known when to fold
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, sold my soul for a dime
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, won’t you give me a little more time
I ain’t so young no more Lord and these old bones they ache
But I still chase trouble for sure Lord if there be a dime to make
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, sold my soul for a dime
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, won’t you give me a little more time
Please don’t take me now Lord for it ain’t my time to go
And when my time comes round Lord oh please don’t make it slow
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, sold my soul for a dime
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, won’t you give me a little more time
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, sold my soul for a dime
Sold my soul for a dime Lord, won’t you give me a little more time

Banjo Jen’s eagerly-awaited second EP
‘Cloud of Dust’ is out now! A collection of the more country-style songs in her repertoire, it features a full band (including backing vocals by Bob Harris Emerging Artist 2022 award-winner Lauren Housley) and is produced by AMA UK award-nominee Thomas Dibb....more
Lauren has a gorgeous soulful voice and crafts beautiful songs, brought to life with the help of her multi-talented husband Tom. They are also just fab human beings. Check out this amazing album! Banjo Jen
Gemma Gray fronts the December Flowers. She's an amazing singer and a fab songwriter, and the band really bring the songs to life with their gorgeous instrumentation. I can't wait to hear more. Banjo Jen
Mark Stoney provided the production magic on my Lost & Found EP (a radical departure from his usual style!). But he's also simply one of the greatest song-writers ever, as 'More Than Animals' prooves. Banjo Jen
Bright and skipping songs that foreground the sound of the banjo and fingerstyle guitar in music that feels timeless. Bandcamp New & Notable Oct 5, 2020
